Metal roofing is one of the more durable materials you can choose. It could last about 2 times as long as a wooden roof or asphalt shingles. With proper care, it’s even possible that your roof will last longer than that. It is also impervious to fire, rot as well as wood boring insects and woodpeckers.

Some might think that a metal roof will be noisy when it hails or rains, but as long as it has solid sheathing, it will actually be very quiet, even through heavy rainstorms.

Often you will have to pay more money upfront to install a metal roof, but since it is a higher quality material, the longer lifespan will be a worthwhile payoff.

One risk that you might face is that of denting due to heavy hail or tree branches falling on your roof. The quality of the roofing will have an impact on how likely this is to happen. Some manufacturers will even provide a warranty against denting.

Stepping into a kitchen where someone is cooking a delicious meal is a nice experience. All the smells just make your mouth water. But if you don’t have a functioning fan sucking out the grease and moisture from your kitchen, it will be detrimental for your home.

Sometimes you will see a fan installed above a stove, but it doesn’t appear to be doing much. It is possible that it is just put there for show, without actually venting the vapors outside. Some fans are just set up to filter the air and then releasing it back into the room.

Proper fan installation is directly above your stove, with ductwork venting the air to the outside. The air should be released at least 10 feet away from any air intakes. To prevent pests from using the vent as an entry point to your home, it should be covered. This is especially important since the smells from your kitchen can attract them from a long distance.

Single Wide’s Or Double Wide’s – Which One Is Better? https://squareoneinspections.com/single-wides-or-double-wides-which-one-is-better/ Fri, 30 Nov 2018 21:27:24 +0000 https://squareoneinspections.com/?p=369 Many people these days are looking towards modular homes as cost effective ways to making their way into a new home for their family. Many people these days are looking towards modular homes as cost effective ways to making their way into a new home for their family. However, they have two different types of options for these manufactured homes, but what are the pros and cons between single wide’s and double wide’s? That is what will be discussed in this article.

So what may be a better fit for you? Well for starters, if you want to have a big family, or you already do, a double wide would be the way to go. They can have up to three times as much space as a single wide does, however they will cost much more because of the increased square footage, which is indeed a downside. When a double wide is done being built, it will be sent out on two different trailers, because they are two halves of the total house. Which means if you were to ever relocate from a spot after its been laid out, it would be difficult to move it.

A single wide has many advantages. While it may not have a lot of square footage, it still has the potential of being a great first home for your family. The cost will go down because of the decreased footage, and is very easy to move in case of a relocation. There are fewer floor plans for the single wide however because of narrow passages and smaller rooms, so there aren’t alot of options, yet on the other hand a double wide has great potential.

Either way, single wides or double wide’s are great options for your families home.

Is satellite internet really an option for your home? Well if many internet providers such as Frontier or Spectrum may not have put internet lines in your area, what options are really left if you need WiFi for your home? Well some options are going to be discussed in this article. Internet has become apart of our lives, almost as important as one of our body parts.

If you live in an area where internet may not be available through typical providers, there are other options you can consider. For instance, there is satellite internet that you can receive through a dish, however the internet speed can vary depending on your location. Even though it may not be the greatest speeds, and can be expensive, it still can give you access to a hand you definitely need.

Another option you can consider is getting a prepaid mobile hotspot. These are small devices that give you data through a phone company, such as Verizon, at&t, or t-mobile. The downside is that if you run out of data, it can get really expensive very quickly and can be a bigger pain to deal with than if you ended up getting satellite. These are just two options for internet possibilities if you live in an area where internet may not be readily available.

You may have never heard of a trombe wall.. but when you hear the application, you are going to be so glad you did hear about it. So what exactly is a trombe wall, and how can it be applied to your home? Well that will be the main topic in this article today.

A trombe wall is basically a sun facing wall that can easily absorb the suns solar rays and apply them into your home for a comfortable heat. It was actually first invented by a French architect in 1964, but the basic idea was used back in ancient times when adobe blocks were used to build huts and keep the heat within the blocks and slowly release them during the night. Usually, if in the northern hemisphere, the wall is a south facing wall that is between 4 and 16 inches thick. This system is great due to the fact it does all of this heat transference passively and requires barely any maintenance, they reduce heating bills, and are relatively simple to install into your own home.

Common modifications can be applied to the wall in order to either increase the amount of heat the wall stores passively or how much heat it blocks. Really the only complication you may have with this type of wall is when there is a period of a few overcast days, where there may be heat loss, however this can be easily remedied by applying insulation to the inner wall. All in all, this wall can be a great option on the table in place of having traditional heat in your home.

Criminals these days are finding easier and easier ways to make easy money by taking things that aren’t theirs for different reasons. As security on say, jewelry and banks are getting tighter, thieves are becoming adaptable and looking for easier targets, like solar panels. Solar panels are expensive, and relatively unprotected on the outside of your home. So how can you protect yourself from having your solar stolen right out from under you? Here are just a few suggestions.

One basic thing is to make sure you have insurance that covers solar panel theft. However, make sure that you keep up to date with your plan because insurance plans have been known to change if a crime spree on a certain item has risen. Another simple defense you can have is to install alarms on your arrays. The alarm can either be activated by cutting the wires from the alarm to the plates, or if a plate is disconnected from the array. Its simple, yet extremely effective at deterring potential thieves. Motion sensors with lights are a great defense as well that act as a deterrent to would be thieves.

If a thief does happen to get away with your equipment, you can have a video camera installed on your roof so that you have documented evidence that could help police in an investigation. If you bind all of the arrays components individually to each other as well, it would make sense that a thief wouldn’t want to waste time on taking down the array itself, thus acting as a good deterrent. Keeping these things in mind will help deter potential thieves from making an easy score off of your expensive solar panels.

Pilot lights – what exactly are they? Well, the exact description of this unique instrument and its function will be discussed in today’s article.

The pilot light is a small flame that is fueled by a small portion of gas supplied a gas line. Pilot lights are most often found in natural gas appliances such as gas stoves, water heaters, clothes dryers, fireplaces, and central heating systems. Sometimes if the flame goes out from the pilot light and be re-ignited. When the appliance is first turned on, the valve releases more gas, and thus ignites the pilot light. However, there is a danger that presents itself when igniting the light. If the flame suddenly stops, but the valve continues to supply the gas to the light, the gas could be released into your home, thus posing a serious danger.

Modern appliances offer an alternative option to traditional pilot lights and gas appliances. Appliances that use electricity are more often sought at now that gas stoves are somewhat obsolete.

What are allergenic plants? You might think – how dangerous can a plant be? Well knowing the three top notorious allergenic plants can give you the knowledge needed in order to stay away from them.

The top three allergenic plants widely known include poison ivy, oak, and sumac. To understand the severity of getting any oil on your skin, only .25 ounces of the oil contained within these plants is sufficient to cause a rash on your skin. Just minutes after contact, the oil will already be under your skin, however the rash will not develop until 12 to 72 hours after initial contact. Depending on your immune systems response time, the rash won’t spread, but will continue to grow. The oil is found in just about every part of the plant, so ripping the plant to shreds will cause more oil to be released than just brushing against it.

But how do you defend against these plants? Well, if you do accidentally brush against any one of these plants, alcohol and cold water can be applied to the area of contact to get rid of the oil, but the area must be thoroughly cleaned to get the oil off. Knowing these few facts can help you to defend against these deadly plants.

Do you happen to have a dryer vent that leads directly outside your house? What should you know about it, keeping it maintained, clean, etc? Well in this article, we will share just a couple of helpful reminders to help you keep your vents safe and as non-combustible as possible.

So if you were to put lint in the vent, then took a match to it after you get done drying some really damp clothes, do you think it would potentially cause a fire, then an electrical malfunction within the dryer itself, leading it to spark then everything else go up in flames? Well, that is what you would be in effect doing if you don’t regularly clean the duct out of this trapped lint. If you don’t, then the lint will become trapped inside the dryer, just as the example states, then the dryer will overheat, causing the lint to catch on fire.

Another preventive maintenance you can do for your vent is to regularly check that the duct work is still connected to the dryer at least twice a month. That way, if you do find that part of the duct work has come apart, you can easily fix it. If duct work were to be left as it was, the heavy buildup of lint and water vapor would stay in between the outside and inside walls, thus creating more problems for you in the future. Keeping these things in mind will help you and your family to have dry clothes, a working dryer, and a safe environment.

If you are an inspector that routinely look at houses for specific problems, like water damage, storm damage, wind damage, etc, you know how it can be to crawl underneath the crawlspace of a house if it does not have a basement. What are some things you will want to be looking for that may constitute replacing some of the foundation out while your inspecting the crawl space? Here’s just a few things to keep in mind.

First, you want to make sure you have the basics: a flashlight and a mask for your mouth to keep all kinds of dirt or dust from getting into your precious lungs. What you will be looking for under the crawl space is evidence of animal infestation, such as groundhogs, chipmunks, snakes, etc that could potentially cause damage to your home. Once that’s done, you can start looking at the foundation from a structural viewpoint.

You want to make absolutely sure that there isn’t any water damage, i.e. flooding that could have potentially shifted the foundation in any way. Also, keep in mind if you have wooden rafters at the bottom of your foundation, you will want to look for any signs of molding, any splinters in the wood, anything that could put into jeopardy that integrity of the house’s foundation. Once you are done with that, do another quick sweep for any signs of any other damage, and you’ll be set to go!

These are just a few things to remember when you go out inspecting a crawl space beneath someone’s house.
