Ants.. they may be everywhere inside your home.. you just never can see them crawling about. What do you do in order to cut back on the ant population in your home, and how can you keep them from coming back? This article will discuss how you can do just so and with complete efficiency.

In order to defend against the ant invaders, you must first know where they came from. So you must start by looking for their nests. You can use the tunnels that they burrow through in order to search for the nest. Once you have found the nest, you can use a special spray foam that will kill the ants on impact, so all you would have to do is vacuum it up afterward.

The next thing that you could try doing is setting up traps around your home, using commercial traps that could bait the entire colony, trap them, and then you can just dispose of the trap when its full. Also, you could use a form of bait poison that, when worker ants come to bring it back to the colony, will poison the entire colony within a matter of days.
In this short list, you can continue on living without hundreds of ants scurrying in the shadows of the walls.

Bee’s can be a bother to those who are constantly outside, spending time with the family, cooking, etc. However, bees like the carpenter bee can be unintentionally hazardous to the inside and outside of your home. But how can you defend against these invaders? Here are just a couple quick tips in defending against these home borrowers.

Well, the first step is to find the burrowers nest. To do so, look for piles of frass, or light wood shavings left behind when the carpenter bees burrow through the wood. Finding one of these piles can help you to locate the nest by following the tunnels. The next step in the control process is to make sure that any holes in the sides of your house or the inside of your house are sealed tight with foam sealant.

A third thing that you can do to stop the migration of carpenter bees into your home is by calling in a bee exterminator. They’ll come in, spray pesticide, fumigate the area, and all of your bee troubles would be gone. However, this takes both time, patience, and extra money. Keeping these reminders in mind will help you to protect your family from the potential injury from these bees, and protecting your home from being eaten alive.

Slips and falls are one of the most common reasons why elderly ones are injured, either in a home or in a business. How can you make sure your business or home is accessible and safe for the elderly?

First of all, keep all power chords and lines free from the flow of traffic, and not laying freely across the floor. Reducing the number of chords on the floor will decrease the chance of a slip or fall for an elderly person. In addition, in the case of an emergency, have emergency contact information accessible near a telephone or doorway. In the case of a slip or fall, having such emergency lifelines like the ‘Life Alert’ necklace will allow emergency response teams to react quickly.

Also, bathrooms are one of the main areas where elderly ones are most likely to fall. Keeping your floors cleaned, your area free of clutter, and stalls handicap accessible will keep elderly ones from injury.

These are just a few things you will need to keep in mind to prevent injury to elderly ones and keep yourself from blame.

Nearly 8,000 children are sent to the ER every day, averaging around 2.8 million every year from non-fatal injuries. So the first step in protecting your child from windows would be to move any furniture from the windows area to make it less accessible for the child. Secondly, by installing windows stops will allow the windows to only be opened to a certain point, maybe 4 inches, thus removing the possibility that a child could put their head out the window or even a limb.

Stairs are another huge danger to young children. Having a safety gate either at the top of the staircase or at the bottom will prevent your child from gaining access to the stairway, which would potentially lead to a fall. Also, your railing along your staircase poses yet another problem. The child may want to climb on it, put their head through the risers, etc. Having the height of your ballisters be between 34″-36″ inches will not allow the child access to the top of the railing, and having 4″ space between each riser will keep the child from putting a limb though.

Keeping all these tips in mind will help you to further protect your child from potential dangers in the home.

Engineered wood flooring is now becoming one of the most common floorings in consumers homes these days. Why is this so, and is it for you?

For starters, any type of engineered wood flooring is any type of wood flooring that is not solid wood. For instance, plywood is considered to be the first type of engineered flooring, but since the creation of OSB (or Oriented Strand Board) engineered flooring, it is cheaper to produce, maintain, and install in large quantities than normal plywood would be. Another advantage of this type of flooring is that building codes do recognize the use of this flooring.

Also, OSB can be created into not only flooring materials, but roofing, siding, and sheathing as well. Due to the many available options and uses from the OSB, contractors will most likely use OSB for flooring or for roofing, however. Interestingly enough, this type of wood can be mass produced, not only using less natural resources to do so but also have a consistent scratch resistant quality from panel to panel.

In conclusion, engineered hardwood flooring would be an excellent choice for your house due to its scratch resistant qualities and inexpensive cost.

The power strip – one of the best tools a homeowner can have, but also one of the many tools that could cause serious damage to your appliances, or even your house. What are some things you need to know in order to protect your electronics and appliances, and potentially even your whole house?

Something that not all people know, is that not all power strips have surge protectors in them. A surge protector basically will protect any devices or appliances connected to the power strip from overloading in the case of a power outage, power spike, or electrical storm. Making sure that when you buy your strip, make sure that it has the proper specs in regards to having a surge protector.

Another thing to watch out for are power strips in either a moist environment or where a strip is located in an area of your home where air ventilation is not as strong. With either of these two things, they will lead to damage to your strip and to corresponding devices/appliances if not properly used. If left in an unventilated area, your strip could overheat, and left in a moist environment, it could spark then short out.

Again, stressing the importance of knowing where the strip is at all times and making sure that it is properly used is of the utmost importance. Proper use of your power strip will allow you to continually enjoy the ease of use, and the convenience of using a power strip.

In the case of a break in, while you are home, you can get to the safe room, which would give you more time to alert the police. Also, if a nuclear bomb exploded, granted it may not survive in the immediate vicinity, but there’s still a chance of survival from the radiation if the room if a safe distance from the blast radius. One of the things that have a higher likelihood of happening, however, is in the case of a natural disaster. What really is defensible space? Well, it can be defined as an area, or zone, around your house that will better protect you from naturally occurring fires, falling trees, or things that could potentially damage your house.

The easiest way to think of this would be to split the area into 3 zones. Zone 1 would be 15 feet in any direction from the outside of your house, having no flammable plants or even firewood, which should be located a reasonable distance away. Zone 2 would be an extension from zone 1, a total of 75 to 125 feet from the house. Keeping flammable debris like dead leaves, branches, or pine needles must be kept in check. If there are trees or shrubs, it may be good to have them spread out, so as to slow a fire down in case one did occur. Zone 3 would extend beyond zone 2 and to the property limit.

More vegetation can be left in this area, but should still be kept in check. Maintaining your zones around your house can help to keep your house and family safe in the long run.

Dangers With Power Generators https://squareoneinspections.com/dangers-power-generators/ Wed, 21 Mar 2018 06:32:28 +0000 https://squareoneinspections.com/?p=295 The post Dangers With Power Generators appeared first on Fairfax VA Home Inspections.

When dealing with any type of generator that provides power, knowing the hazards that it creates are essential to keeping yourself out of preventing injury to yourself. Here are a couple of hazards that you should know about when dealing with any type of generator.

For starters, any type of generator produces carbon monoxide, that deadly gas that none of us like to hear about. So it is vital to have any type of generator in an open environment, where ventilation won’t be a problem.

Connecting a generator directly to a house’s outlet could result in serious electrical feedback. When generators are directly exposed to water, the risk of electrocution is greater when you handle it, so during a storm or other situation, make sure the generator is well protected from the water.

Always exercise caution when handling equipment that is hazardous, and the fruits of your caution will keep you from harm’s way.

Safely Using Your Ladder https://squareoneinspections.com/safely-using-ladder/ Tue, 20 Mar 2018 06:32:15 +0000 https://squareoneinspections.com/?p=292 The post Safely Using Your Ladder appeared first on Fairfax VA Home Inspections.

Over 49,000 injuries from ladder falls are reported every year, so knowing how to use a ladder the right way while doing construction projects or any DIY projects is of the utmost importance. Some safety tips and ladder tips are as follows:

Knowing the different types of ladders is the first step to prevent injury. Each different type of ladder has its own ability, so knowing the abilities and functions will help prevent injury to yourself in the long run. Before using a ladder, make sure all the components, i.e. bolts, screws, steps, are attached properly, etc.

Always face the ladder when walking up and down the steps, to minimize the chances of slipping and falling. When setting up your ladder, make sure it is set up on secure ground, so that as you climb up, the ladder doesn’t move side to side and have that potential of falling over with you on it.

If you are on a roof, be aware of where the ladder is. If it does fall, and you don’t know it, you could unknowingly go to step back on it with nothing being there, thus leading to a fall. Finally, wearing the right kind of safety gear is vital as well. Gear like hard hats, eye protection, heavy duty boots, and gloves will help keep you steady on the ladder and will prevent injury to your head if you do fall.

Keeping these tips in mind will help you to remain injury free, and complete your projects with the best outcome.
