Some people may prefer natural wood decking because they just like the overall look of natural wood. Even though composite decking may be more expensive than wood decking, there are advantages to composite decking. So if you are in the process of building a new deck or renovating an old one, here are the advantages of using composite decking.

The first advantage of using composite decking is that composite decking can last about 30 years, sometimes longer. Natural wood decking does not last nearly as long. Another advantage is that besides washing composite decking semi-annually, composite decking is almost maintenance-free. You will never need to sand, paint, or stain your deck as long as your composite decking lasts. Most composite decking is also stain-resistant and can hold up to harsh weather. Natural wood decking does stain, and harsh weather also affects the decking. The last advantage is that most composite deckings have built-in UV resistance, so they will not fade or lighten as much as natural wood.

These are a few advantages of choosing composite decking instead of wood decking. Even though you may prefer a natural wood look, there are many color options available and composite decking can be just as beautiful.

If your toilet bubbles when no one is using it, does that freak you out? Some might imagine that there is some type of sewer animal coming up the pipes, but this is most likely not the case. Instead, it indicates that there is a problem with your plumbing system.

There might be a major blockage in your plumbing. The reason for the bubbling is a simple matter of physics. When anything goes down the sewer pipes it displaces gas that is inside the pipes. This gas will need to go somewhere. Usually, it will go out the vent pipe that is connected to your plumbing system, but with that being blocked, the gas will find the easiest way out, which often will prove to be your toilet.

A blocked vent pipe will cause all your drains to go slower as well, and the sewer gas that comes out is actually harmful to your health when exposed to it for a longer time, so it is important to fix this problem. It might require the help of a plumber, since the vent pipe could be difficult to access.

One of the many advantages to owning your own home is that it is easy to have access to your own washer and dryer. Many homes already have these installed, while some new homeowners will install them once they move in. While the convenience of this is great, it does require that the necessary hookups are installed.

Of course, the obvious hookups are electricity and water, but not everyone pays attention to the need to have the dryer vented properly. They might install a lint trap that will recirculate the air from the dryer back into the home, but this is not a good idea.

Why? Because an estimated gallon of water can be released from a full load of laundry. Just imagine what damage could be done if you decided to empty out a bucket containing a gallon of water into your home. If your dryer vents inside the home, that is basically what you are doing. Instead, you should have a duct venting the exhaust from the dryer outside.

Hummingbirds can only be found in the Americas, so we have the wonderful privilege of being able to enjoy them. Here are a few ways to keep your hummingbird feeder clean and safe for your hummingbirds.

The first way to care for your feeder is to clean your feeder twice per week in hot weather and once per week in cooler weather. Hummingbird feeders and hummingbird food can get dirty and moldy. This can be very dangerous for hummingbirds and their babies. If you don’t have a hummingbird cleaner brush, you can use a pipe cleaner or a bottle brush. These will work just as well.

Another way to care for your hummingbird feeder is by the food that you use. Hummingbird feeders do not need expensive hummingbird food. You can make your own food by heating up, but not boiling, 1:4 parts sugar to water. Heat the solution up until the sugar dissolves. Then after the solution cools, add it to your feeder. Also, you do not need to add food coloring.

These are just a few ways to help you care for your hummingbird feeder to keep the hummingbirds healthy and to keep them coming back.

Are you adding an addition to your home? Adding an addition to your home can be very exciting, but there are a few things to keep in mind while you are in the building process.

Keep in mind that while building your addition there may be a lot of nails or other small pieces of building materials laying on the ground. So try to keep your children and pets away from these areas. Remember too that there will be a lot of noise, so you may want to plan some time away for your young children and pets or move your pets and young children to an area that is furthest away from the noise. Another thing to keep in mind with your pets is that you may not be able to let your pets roam free if that’s what they normally do, around the building area. The last thing you will want to keep in mind is that you may need to sacrifice some of your grass or plants around the building site or the areas traveled on to your building site.

These are just a few things to keep in mind while you are building your addition.

Mosquitoes can be extremely annoying when you’re trying to enjoy your backyard. Here are a few ways to help you to reduce your mosquito population.

The first way is to increase the number of mosquito predators in your yard. Bats and some birds love to eat mosquitoes, so try to install a bird or bat house to attract these predators. Bird or bat houses are easy to build, so you could even build one yourself or make it a fun family project.

Another way to reduce mosquitoes is to plant mosquito repellent plants. Some examples are lavender, marigolds, rosemary, bee balm, and citronella plants. Mosquitoes do not like these plants.

The last way to reduce the mosquito population is to get rid of any standing water. Tree holes, saucers of your outdoor flower pots, clogged rain gutters, and discarded cans and containers can all be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Also, bird baths can be breeding grounds, just try to replace the water weekly in your bird baths. There are also products available to treat mosquitoes in your ponds or water gardens.

With these few ways, you will be able to reduce the mosquito population so that you are better able to enjoy your backyard.

Many people are not the biggest fan of bats, but bats play a very important role in the ecosystem. Bats play a part in pollination and seed dispersal, and they eat many mosquitoes. So if you are interested in inviting bats into your yard, here are a few things to keep in mind when installing a bat house.

You could build your own bat house, which there are free plans online, or you can purchase a bat house. Just keep in mind that your bat house should be at least 24 inches high and 16 inches wide and that the house should not contain any mesh or fabric. Also, there should be a water source within a quarter of a mile. Bats prefer when the bat house is mounted on buildings or other large wooden or concrete structures because it offers more of a consistent temperature, just make sure the spot gets at least six hours of sun exposure. They do not like it when the house is mounted on a tree because the house is normally too shaded or because of the high risk of predation.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when installing your bat house and will hopefully invite those bats into your yard.

Worm composting can provide you with great nutrient-filled soil for your garden. Here’s how to get your worm composting started.

The first step is to get a food-safe plastic five-gallon bucket with a lid. Then, poke very small holes into the lid and into the bottom of the bucket. Next place layers of leaf trash or even some lawn clippings with wet strips of newspaper into your bucket. Then place your worms, you only need a few to get started, into your bucket. You can simply dig up worms yourself, or you can purchase them online or in a local store where they sell fishing worms. Red worms tend to work best for worm composting in a bucket. The last step is to feed your worms vegetable or fruit scraps.

A few things to keep in mind for the care of your worms is that you will want to keep your worm bucket moist, dark, and warm, but not hot. Also, feed your worms regularly. You will not want to feed your worms any oils, dairy products, or meats. You may also want to stay away from citrus fruits since these can attract fruit flies.

You will be surprised at how quickly your worms will break down all the newspaper and scraps and leave you with beautiful soil for your garden.

Is your home getting those annoying tiny fruit flies? Here are a few tips to help you get rid of those pesky fruit flies.

The first tip is to see what is attracting the fruit flies. Is there one tiny piece of fruit that is starting to rot in the bottom of your fruit bowl? Make sure to inspect all your fruit and vegetables that you leave out for any imperfections, the smallest spot will attract fruit flies.

The next tip is to wipe down all your countertops and keep your sink free from food particles since fruit flies do not like clean surfaces.

The last tip is to make your own fruit fly trap. Simply fill a bowl or jar about halfway with apple cider vinegar and add a drop of dish soap. The vinegar will attract the fruit flies, and the dish soap will reduce the surface tension so that the fruit flies will not be able to fly off the surface. Then, secure plastic wrap on top of the bowl or jar with a rubber band. Next, poke small holes into the plastic wrap.

These few tips will help you to get rid of your pesky fruit fly problem.

There are pros and cons to purchasing an electric stove or a gas stove. Here are a few things about each stove to help you to decide which stove will be best for you.

Gas stoves, depending on the area where you live, can be less expensive to purchase and operate than electric stoves. Also, gas stoves offer more precise temperature control than electric ones. On the other hand, even though gas stoves can be powered by butane, propane, or liquified petroleum, most gas stoves today run on natural gas, which requires a gas line to the house. Natural gas lines may not be available in your area.

When it comes to electric stoves, they tend to be more energy-efficient than gas stoves. Electric stoves are also considered to be generally safer for households due to having no open flame and because there is no risk of a gas leak. Also, electric stoves can be easier to clean. Most electric stoves can also simmer better and go to high heat quicker than gas stoves. Although when adjusting the temperature down or turning the heat off, the electric stove responds slower than a gas stove.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when purchasing your new stove.
