Cats scratch things for a number of reasons. They scratch to leave their scent, remove the outside of their nails, and to simply stretch their legs and muscles. Most people really do not want their cats scratching up their furniture. Here are a few tips to help deter your cats from scratching your furniture.
The first tip is to offer your cat several scratching posts. Cats do not like all scratching posts. Most do prefer ones that are at an angle and also ones that are horizontal rather than vertical ones. If you do purchase a vertical scratching post make sure it’s tall enough for your cat to fully reach upon. Also, keep the scratching post in an area where your cat hangs out the most.
Another tip is to try spraying the area where your cat scratches with a scent deterrent. The only thing with the sprays is that you may need to frequently reapply the spray.
Even though this might not be the most attractive option, you can try attaching aluminum foil or attach plastic panels to the scratching areas. You can purchase these plastic panels, which are made specifically for your furniture to deter cat scratching.
These are just a few tips to help deter your cat from scratching and to prevent them from ruining your furniture.
