There are some people who love to feed the squirrels and do not mind that they eat from their bird feeders. There are some, on the other hand, that would like their bird feeders to be free from squirrels so that they are more able to enjoy the birds. Here are a few ideas to help you to discourage squirrels from visiting your birdfeeder.
First, if you use a pole to hang your feeder, you can try attaching a squirrel baffle to the pole. This will hopefully discourage the squirrel from climbing a pole. Some people will put a slinky around the pole, this too prevents the squirrel from climbing up the pole.
Another idea would be to try using a caged bird feeder or a squirrel-resistant feeder. Just keep in mind that if you decide to purchase a caged bird feeder, that only small birds will fit through, and that if a squirrel is small enough, it may still be able to get through the cage.
The last idea is that if you just can’t get rid of the squirrels, you may want to try offering them their own food. You could use a dry corn cob feeder, which you can make yourself, to feed the squirrels. Then hopefully, the squirrels will eat their own food and leave your bird feeder alone.
These are just a few ideas to help you to keep your bird feeders free from squirrels so that you are better able to enjoy the birds.
