The convenience of a garbage disposal in your kitchen can’t be denied. However, sometimes, due to the fact that you run a lot of organic material through a garbage disposal, it can start to smell. What causes this is when something organic gets stuck in the blades or housing and starts to rot.

Many times this problem can be solved simply by running ice through the garbage disposal, since this can dislodge leftovers without risking getting stuck.

You should also use the garbage disposal in such a way that it is unlikely for anything to get stuck in the first place.

You should not abruptly turn of the motor once it sounds like it is done. Instead, you should leave the water running for a while before turning the blades and the water off. That way the blades have time to be cleaned off after use. You should also avoid fibrous vegetables that can turn into strands which will wrap around the blades.
